Religion is my "Thang"

Oh, please share! I collect stories like this!
You will find it quite unlike the Song of Songs, yet even so the spiritual journey is the same. Of course there is no personal god of love in Buddhism so the language is different .... or is it really!

It's delightful to see a similar journey in this to that of The Ascent of Mount Carmel and the Dark Night of the Soul.

This links you to the pictures and the explanations of them.

I set them to music a while back and here's a link:

nteresting that you brought up Richard Rohr. Are you connected at all with his Center for Action and Contemplation? He is getting reading to retire, and it very much looks in the works for Brian McLaren (author of Faith After Doubt) to succeed him. I had a short correspondence with Brian McLaren, and I think he is an amazing man and will do an amazing job of continuing Richard Rohr's legacy.
No, I know and admire his work but I haven't had anything to do with his Center. I like his work on the Enneagram as well - his You Tube videos are fascinating and give a refreshingly alternative perspective on it.

And this too maybe?

@meowzician do you have any recommendations for religious texts or concepts to look into? I love learning about different religions. I've gotten a lot from studying the Daodejing, the Upanishads (Vedic), the Poetic Edda (Norse Mythology). Is there anything from especially Judaism that you recommend?

I don't think these are mainstream, but I've gotten a lot out of contemplating the character of Lilith (to know for sure I am completely unaligned with people following that path) and I think the connection between tarot cards and the Kabalistic tree of life fascinating but I still don't quite understand it. One of my favorite psychological theories is from the Jewish researcher Shalom H. Schwartz, called the Theory of Basic Human Values.

Depends what you are looking for. If you want a textbook that gives a broad overview of Jewish practices, holidays, etc. that pretty easy for me to do.

But I suspect that what you are after is the wisdom, something like the Tao Te Ching. There is plenty, all sorts of wonderful stories and proverbs and sayings, but they are all buried within much longer texts. The Torah is five books long. The Tanakh is 24 books (39 in the Protestant Old Testament).. The Artscroll Babylonian Talmud is 73 volumes. And we haven't even started. No, I'm not exaggerating. I suspect we may be the most literary culture on the planet--you are opening Pandora's box.

If you truly want to read Jewish wisdom literature, I have to warn you of something. Our history is full of wonder, beauty, meaning, and the shouldering of moral responsibility; but it is also full of profound suffering. Our wisdom is wisdom born in anguish. If that's not what you want, then I would stay far away from Jewish writings.

Most people want to start with the Tanakh (What Christians refer to as the Old Testament in the Bible)
  • Many of the most classic stories are in Genesis and Exodus (two of the books of the Torah)
  • Many begin with the Psalms. Keep in mind that this is a collection of song lyrics. There is a lot of figurative language. And a lot of it is the expression of human emotion--most of the psalms are very inspiring, but sometimes humans can feel depressed and angry and bitter and even vengeful.
  • Proverbs is, well, proverbs
  • Ecclesiastes is amazing, but many people find it depressing because it is very frank about reality
  • Job deals with the problem of unjust suffering and not blaming the victim.

The Pirkei Avot, "The Sayings of the Fathers" was the first Jewish book I ever read that was not part of the Bible. It was given to me by a Jewish friend when I asked for the same thing you are. Wow, that sure brings back a lot of memories! It has many wonderful sayings in it that you'll find yourself reflecting on, like, "Turn it and turn it, for everything is in it."

Let's talk mysticism. Kabbalah is going to be too much, and that also excludes a lot of books that are Kabbalah adjacent, but I think you might really enjoy these:
Tzava'at HaRivash -- these are teachings attributed to the Baal Shem Tov
Likutei Moharan -- this is Rebbe Nachman of Breslov's core mystical-homiletic work
Sippurei Ma'asiyot -- this is Rebbe Nachman's mystical tales

Now let's talk stories.

I don't mean for this to be patronizing in the slightest--as an elementary teacher I read children's books all the time, and not always to my class. LOL (I also still watch Disney princess movies.) My suggestion to anyone who is starting at the very beginning is to find a children's collection of Bible stories. Try Ellen Frankel's Illustrated Children's Bible. It retells 53 stories.

Louis Ginzberg's Legends of the Jews is a two volume set written for adults. I have not read it, but I asked a friend for a recommendation on your behalf, and this is her favorite.

Let's move to longer works from the 20th century:
Martin Buber's I and Thou
Abraham Joshua Heschel's Man is not Alone -- you will love his concept of radical amazement
Victor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning

If you enjoy novels, I highly recommend
The Chosen by Chaim Potok

library of the untold you tube ,covers it all and is very entertaining in the way it correlates info
YouTube has some great (and yes, entertaining) videos. But it also has a lot of junk, and sometimes it can be difficult to sort the junk from the good stuff. Yes, there are some really excellent YouTube videos on Jews and Judaism. But there are also atrocious videos that make incredible mistakes about Judaism, say phenomenally stupid things about our culture, misunderstand and misuses the Talmud, advocate moronic theories that geneticists have disproven, and sometimes just spread outright hate. How is someone who knows nothing about Jews supposed to discern the difference?

Wow, @mind pilot ENTP. That was off the chain. 😂 Part of me just wanted to just walk away after:

I challenged GOD that night .....and won

But, I was honestly just too curious to see where this unhinged, crass, and strangely interesting post, that starts off so promising—by this character who has complete disregard for all grammar/spelling conventions, and is obviously very intelligent—was going. I still don’t really know what to think. 😆

This following is completely unsolicited, but I can’t help myself but to say it:

I don’t like this sentence at all:

mormons dum dum dum dum dum

In general, I don’t like your categorization treatment, even if interesting.

I really like these sentences:
As a Gentile I am well practiced in the art of appearing to be human , its an honor to be an animal that has human vocal chords
At the age of 7 the "age of reason " my father a Roman Catholic ,came into my room and said i am old enough to offend God

I’ve never heard it verbalized that people get to “an age where they are “old enough to offend God”. Reading that alone was worth the read.

I appreciate how unashamedly yourself you are, man.

I hope you have a nice day.

First, I'm very sorry what your father said that to you. How harmful that must have been! That is the sort of thing that leaves deep scars. SMH

However, I need too respond to some of the truth claims you have made that are incorrect.

I must tell you that you don't understand how the Talmud works. It is a collection of debates and many points are made, good ones and bad ones, points that have become part of Judaism, and points that were rejected and forgotten. It is impossible to simply open the Talmud, read a remark, and assume that it is Judaism.

I want you to imagine the Continental Congress. Now pretend that someone was there to record all of the debates. Can you imagine all the conflicting ideas? That is what the Talmud is.

Judaism doesn't teach that non-Jews are animals. I do occasionally run across racist Jews, because there are good Jews and bad Jews like like in any other large group. Their views are not Jewish teaching. A non-Jew who lives a good moral and decent life has a share in the world to come. Their status is not different than that of a Jew who lives a good moral and decent life.

Now let's talk about the Torah. Maimonides, perhaps the best Jewish mind ever born, taught way back in the middle ages that the Genesis creation story was an allegory not meant to be taken literally. There is no historical Adam. There is no historical Eve and thus no literal mitochondrial DNA from her.

I realize there are those who do believe the story is historical. They are mistaken, inclined to the sort of concrete thinking that can confuse the figurative with the literal. Try to understand that their mistake doesn't automatically make them bad people. An intellectual error is not a moral lapse.

The story of Adam and Eve is an INCREDIBLE story. It deals with the nature of humanity, and the disharmony of our relationship with God. It is an incredibly powerful piece of literature and completely deserving of its place in our anthology of Jewish sacred texts. It doesn't need to be history to have this power. Indeed, fiction is a far, far better medium of a culture's most deeply held values.

It is a myth, although like many myths, it seems to preserve a grain of historicity. In this case I would suggest a race memory of the evolution of our human conscience, a kind of memory of how we moved from a state of innocent harmony with nature, with others, with ourselves, and with God, to a state where our developing conscience sometimes comes into odds with earlier instincts and creates dissonance.

Finally, as an ex-Catholic, and one who was highly educated in the faith, let me state that your father had a child's understanding. If you sit down to a heart to heart with a priest you will find a much more nuanced understanding of masterbation. While the Catholic Church does truly have a thing where sex has to be connected with procreation, a stance I personally find most unfortunate, it doesn't teach that masturbation for teens and young men is a mortal sin.

This is because in order for a sin to be mortal, it must be something freely chosen, and the physical pressure for young men to relieve themselves renders it an action that is not entirely voluntary. A sin? To the priest in the confessional, yes. But a venial sin, not a mortal sin. A sin on par with losing your patience with someone.

Certainly not something that a loving God would EVER smite you for.

Being raised by someone like your father, and possibly others in your parish with faith that never matured to an adult understanding, I can easily understand why you would abandon not just Catholicism but all religion. It breaks my heart when I see this sort of thing happening, because I realize it means that the damage follows you through your life. But I don't condemn you. You are doing the best you can do with the hand you have been dealt.

Nor does God condemn you.

In the bible before the flood it is kind of fuzzy what happens.

But Adam's son was Seth who is related to Noah whose son was Shem who goes to Abraham.

Technically no flood existed beside the Ice age deluge which happend 10,000 years ago not 6,000

But whatever happened Adam could have been a real person in Mesopotamia its just fuzzy.

We do not have records that would be 100% proof - Its not a myth exactly because Shem could be real and so far back to Adam. The story that only Noah family survived would be inaccurate but Noah could have had a relative who was Seth who had a father who may be Adam. Only the flood part makes it a myth but these people do not have to exist in such a exact flood story and could be real. So more a legend than myth.

Yes you could say the Adam and Eve story is supposed to be more of a moral allegory but that not exactly be the tradition of oral transmission of such stories because the origin of the story would need explaining. These people were not part of a written record until Moses time and it was orally transmitted but they were important enough to remember to the people telling the story.

So you believe that the opening chapters of Genesis are history?

So you believe that the opening chapters of Genesis are history?

I believe they came from an oral tradition of lineages trying to explain how those peoples origins began.

Oral family Lineages is not an uncommon thing for a set of people to do, Jewish people just have the longest one I think.

Whomever taught Abraham his lineage got passed down to the people around the time of exodus so it quite possible Abraham had some memory of Adam. Other things get put in there sometimes that get embellished the further back things go. But it starts somewhere.

(Adam as the first human would not be true but he would be said to be so because of some translation issues maybe, he would be very important if he was the first person in the family to be remembered)
